There are some people -lucky I would say- who know from their childhood what they would like to do in their lives. One of them is self-taught Matias Sierra who at very young age he realized that the clay is the object that he adores. Born in Argentina, he began experimenting with different materials at the age of nine and at thirteen he had already end up with clay.
Seeing Matias’ works I feel that he really enjoys his contact with this supple material, which enables him to make the surreal images that he have thought of, or even has empathized with or has lived. Imperfect bodies, autonomous hands, faces of puzzle pieces, books on head’s place or books- windows. Matias has no answers to give about his works, he does not know why he is “obsessed” with making hands. The only thing he does know is that his inspiration is his mind and his path is clay.
Matias Sierra lives and works in Canada now and you can see his work at his site
and in devianart
